NDIS FAQs

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are custom-made or prefabricated inserts designed to fit into your shoes to support, align, and improve the function of your feet. They can help alleviate pain, improve posture, and reduce strain on other parts of the body.

Who can benefit from orthotics?

Orthotics are beneficial for people experiencing foot pain, lower limb injuries, arthritis, flat feet, high arches, plantar fasciitis, bunions, corns and calluses, and/or those needing additional support, pressure reflief and alignment during daily activities or sports.

What problems or conditions can be managed with custom-made orthotics?

Orthotics are commonly used for:
Heel or arch pain
General foot pain
Back, knee or shin pain
Plantar fasciitis
Flat feet
Corns & calluses
High arched feet
Aching or tired legs and/or feet
Neuroma
Clawed or hammer toes
Bunions
Pressure distribution
Achilles tendon problems
Ankle instabilities (recurrent sprains)

How are custom orthotics different from store-bought insoles?

Custom orthotics are specifically designed for your feet and tailored to address your unique needs and biomechanical issues. Store-bought insoles offer general cushioning and support but lack the precision and individual tailoring of custom orthotics.

How long do custom orthotics last?

With proper care, custom orthotics typically last 1–2 years. Regular check-ups are recommended to ensure they remain effective as your needs change. Depending on your requirements and activities, multiple orthotics can be supplied.

Are orthotics covered by private health insurance?

Many private health insurance plans in Australia cover orthotics under “Extras” for podiatry. Check with your provider to understand your level of cover and any out-of-pocket expenses.
